Korea University Medical Center¡¯s Camp for Children with Diabetes celebrates its 10th anniversary.
The medical center hosted the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the 2010 Spring Day Camp for Children and Families with Diabetes in the Grand Auditorium on the eighth floor of Anam Hospital on May 30.
The camp, under the slogan of ¡°My Family Is My Strength¡± this year, featured special lectures, blood sugar level checkups and consultations, a magic show, an a¡¯cappella performance and so forth, encouraging participants to continue on with their strives to triumph over diabetes. President Kim Chang-deok of Anam Hospital and Director Choi Dong-seob of the Diabetes Center visited the camp themselves, delivering messages of hope and encouragement to the participants.
The Camp for Children with Diabetes was first held on June 4, 2000, by Professor Lee Kee-hyoung of the Department of Pediatrics as a gathering and discussion among family members with children with diabetes. It has continued ever since for the last decade.
Held twice a year, the camp features various entertaining and educational programs, in which doctors, nurses, nutritionists and social workers seek to help participants improve their understanding of diabetes in children and help children themselves maintain their health better. The camp is widely popular, garnering over 100 participants each time it is held.
The parent of a patient who has participated in all the camps said: ¡°The camp has imbued my child and me with a new hope and power to continue our struggle against diabetes. I hope all the participants could gather our wisdom to ease the pain of our children and overcome diabetes eventually.¡±
Prof. Lee of the Department of Pediatrics said: ¡°Recently I had the joy of presiding over the wedding ceremony of a patient I have treated since her childhood. I am sincerely grateful to everyone who has made the camp possible and has maintained it throughout the last ten years. Most importantly, I thank the children and their family members who have bravely fought against diabetes with never-ending hopes, courage and commitment.¡±
